Civic Centre name still not decided

Thursday, 21 January 2010

COUNCILLORS at Limavady Borough Council are still discussing a name for the town's new civic centre, which they hope will be open by this summer.
At a recent meeting, council considered a number of names submitted by the public, including Limavady Town Hall, Drumceatt Centre, Broighter Arts & Cultural Centre, The Danny Boy Arts Centre and Kenaught Centre.
Whilst some members favoured the traditional name of Limavady Town Hall, others felt that a name encompassing the area's history should be included. Cllr Anne Brolly suggested calling different areas within the centre after historical themes such as 'The Danny Boy Theatre'.
Alderman Gerry Mullan stated: "This is an opportunity to promote the borough. This will be an opportunity missed if we don't."
Cllr Boyd Douglas urged his fellow members to opt for "a sensible name," and suggested councillors look at the Roe Valley and "the bigger picture."
His suggestion was agreed by Alderman Jack Rankin and Cllr Michael Coyle who both felt that Roe Valley should be included in the name to reflect the geographical area and not just Limavady town.
Valerie Richmond, Director of Development informed councillors that while there was no specific time frame, "the sooner we get a name, the better," to allow for advertising and signage.
The issue is to come before members again next month.
The new Civic Centre will provide a much needed focal point for the arts, events and festivals within the town. It will provide a central location for a local Museum service and provide and enable council to retain local collections on site. The Tourist Information Centre will be relocated from the Council Offices to the new Civic Centre.
The new facility will also include an outdoor piazza which can be used for a range of outdoor events and activities.
