Civic reception for council staff
Thursday, 21 January 2010
LIMAVADY Borough Council is to recognise the work carried out by staff during the 'big freeze'
The reception will celebrate those who gritted pavements and cleaned up afterwards.
The decision was taken at the monthly meeting of Council's Environmental Services committee, following a proposal by Cllr Leslie Cubitt.
Cllr Cubitt said: "These members of staff went above and beyond the call of duty - they did an exceptional job and we should show our appreciation. We took a decision to grit the pavements and staff were not left wanting."
Whilst echoing Cllr Cubitt's praise, Cllr Michael Coyle, who was chairing the meeting, said the efforts of all staff were recognised at Christmas time.
The Chief Executive, Mr Liam Flanagan, pointed out that all praise voiced by members would be passed on to the relevant workers, adding: "Many staff have worked hard under difficult circumstances and council is developing a staff recognition approach to ensure that all staff are recognised when a job is well done."
It was suggested by the Mayor, Cllr Cathal Ó hOisín that a reception for all levels of staff be held to recognise the receipt of the Investors in People award, adding: "It would be my hope that this reception for all staff would be held sooner rather than later."
Alderman Gerry Mullan stated that: "While Cllr Cubitt means well, to single out any employees would be a dangerous precedent."
Cllr Anne Brolly stated that the proposal put councillors in "a very invidious position."
As tempers flared within the chamber, Cllr Coyle threatened to throw out the proposal if members continued to argue.
