Help for Haiti
Thursday, 28 January 2010
Limavady Central School pupils Jodie, Joshua, Cara, Sasha, Benjamin, Nicole, Lucas, Finn and Casey take their hats off for charity at the Limavady Central School ‘Hats for Haiti’ appeal day last week.
PEOPLE from across the Limavady Borough have been throwing their weight behind the campaign to raise funds for the people of Haiti.
Limavady company Seating Matters, is helping those injured in the earthquake in a unique way. Seating Matters, who make specialist chairs, such as wheelchairs, are hoping to visit the area within the next six months to offer their services.
After the rescue project is completed and relief has been delivered, representatives of Seating Matters hope to fly out and offer their specialist service.
Schools from Limavady, Dungiven, Eglinton and Ballykelly have been holding a variety of fundraising events this week to help the impoverished people of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere.
Many schools are holding non-uniform days, asking pupils to donate money in order to take part.
These efforts are to help the Caribbean nation, which was struck on Tuesday January 12 by a devastating earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. It is believed that there may be in excess of 50,000 deaths. Haiti has a population of 9.6 million inhabitants, of which more than half are under 21 years old.
Last week, Limavady Borough Council launched a campaign and placed two collection points, at the council offices and the Roe Valley Leisure Centre. The collection for Haiti undertaken by Limavady Borough Council is being well received, according to a council spokesperson.
For the appeal, blue recycle bins were placed at both the reception of the council offices and at the Roe Valley Leisure Centre last Thursday for people to place monetary donations.
The spokesperson said: "Members of the public have been donating generously to the Haiti appeal. Staff within council are also planning an event to help raise funds by organising a soup kitchen next week. Staff will be making soup and selling it to fellow staff. The money raised from this event will also go to the Haiti Appeal."
