Council united in disgust

Thursday, 12 June 2008

THERE was cross party condemnation of the recent arson attacks in Limavady at Tuesday night's (June 10) Council meeting in the town.
The new Mayor of Limavady, Brenda Chivers, lead the way in condeming outright the vicious attacks.
Both the SDLP's Michael Coyle and the UUC's Leslie Cubitt echoed the Mayor's sentiments, with Cllr Cubitt adding: "This was an absolute disgrace."
Cllr Cubitt also said: "If and when the police do catch these thugs, the problem is that they usually end up just getting a slap on the wrist. We need a much stronger deterrent in order to stop this kind of behaviour."
Michael Carten of the SDLP said: "It's all very well condemning these attacks, and I know everyone of us here does, but we have to do something about this.
“It is a disgrace, an 81-year-old man, who has lived and worked in Limavady all his life, being the victim of this kind of crime along with his wife."
Councillor Jack Rankin joined the chorus of condemnation adding that thanks should be given to the PSNI, who spotted the fire, adding that without their intervention, this could easily have resulted in a death.
Sinn Fein's Councillor Anne Brolly aded: "I think this has to be treated as attempted murder, and the people who carried out this attack must realise that this is how their crime will be viewed, and the parents of those who carried out this attack need to realise this as well."
