Storm on the Hill

Thursday, 19 January 2017

NORTHERN Ireland Secretary of State, Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP, has confirmed there is to be a 2017 snap Assembly election on Thursday March 2.
He made the announcement live at Stormont at approximately 5.30pm yesterday (Monday).
Mr Brokenshire was forced to call the election after Sinn Féin refused to nominate a new deputy First Minister following the resignation of Martin McGuinness on January 9.
His resignation automatically put the DUP leader Arlene Foster out of her job as First Minister because they hold a joint office.
The last Assembly elections took place in May 2016 when six MLAs were returned in East Londonderry, DUP George Robinson (Limavady), DUP Maurice Bradley (Coleraine), DUP Adrian McQullan (Garvagh), SDLP Gerry Mullan (Limavady), Sinn Féin Caoimhe Archibald, (Coleraine/Limavady) and Independent MLA Claire Sugden.
