End of an era

ON Saturday January 14 2017, at 5:30pm, Norman Hunters and Sons closed its doors for the last time after an incredible 50 years of business. After running a successful butcher for over half a century, winning numerous awards and opening Northern Ireland's first delicatessen and butchers combined, Ian Hunter felt now was the right time to shut up shop.
Ian recalled that Norman Hunter, who was still acting as a delivery man in his 80s, had told him: "No matter what son, don't go on as long as I did, there is a time to go."
In 1896 the butchers, which was an old white washed building, was being run under the name of O'Brien's. It was these O'Brien's that took on a 12 year old Norman Hunter in the early 30s and trained him into the professional butcher he became.
It was in the early 1960s when Norman took over the business completely and Norman Hunters Butchers was opened. Norman, who passed away in 2010, started to develop the business from the minute he took over.
