FORMER SDLP MLA Gerry Mullan has announced that he will stand as an independent candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections. Mr Mullan's announcement comes following the SDLP's decision to select retired MLA John Dallat, as the party's sole candidate in the local constituency.
Speaking to this newspaper today, Mr Mullan said, "For the past 20 years I have served the SDLP faithfully. I endeavoured to represent them and my constituents with integrity at all times.
“I was deselected by the party in favour of another retired candidate. Not only did I feel let down by the party but I felt I was letting the people, who have supported and worked with me over the years, down.
“I want to continue to represent the people and I have no intentions of neglecting them. I have been overwhelmed by the amount of people who contacted me to thank me following my de-selection. Many also shared their disappointment and concerns with me and that is why I decided to run as an independent.
