MOTORISTS were left frustrated after barriers at Bellarena train halt became stuck yesterday (Monday), leading to long tailbacks.
It was reported that the railway barriers in Bellarena were stuck however the lights were flashing and some motorists were not passing as it is deemed an offence. This led to long tailbacks as Translink sent engineers to the area to deal with the issue.
Frustrated motorists took to social media to vent their annoyance at the delays.
One man tweeted: "Translink NI - I've been waiting for 20 minutes now at Bellarena with the barriers going up and down. Not a train in sight. Long queue of cars."
He later tweeted: "Railway barriers at Bellarena stuck but lights flashing. Buses and cars not passing as it's an offence. Long tailbacks."
One driver tweeted: "We gave up and after ten mins, went through it" while another motorist stated it was "sort of Magilligan roulette."
Aldermen Alan Robinson has described the situation as, "very embarrassing for Translink NI."
He continued: "This has been a recurring theme on parts of the line. I would encourage Translink NI to investigate and address these matters urgently.
"It is bad enough for local people to be delayed on the train lines but now train services are causing delays on our roads.
“It simply isn't good enough," added Mr Robinson.
A spokesperson for Translink NI said: "We can confirm that there was a signalling issue in Bellarena yesterday (Monday) which caused problems for road traffic at the level crossing.
“Technicians were called to rectify the fault which was caused by strong winds and our engineers continue to monitor the situation.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to people in the area."
