United announce plans for new Community Sports Hub
Thursday, 2 March 2017
LIMAVADY United have announced plans to move from their Showgrounds home as part of a major new proposed sports community hub to be located within the grounds of the Orange Field on the Roemill Road, The Northern Constitution can reveal. The club has been as its present Rathmore Road site since 1962 but with its lease due to run out in October 2028, the owners of the ground, Queen's University, have rejected all requests for an extension of the lease.
With the short period of ownership remaining open to the club, it has been restricted in the type of grant funding which it can access and the past two years have been spent exploring alternative venues within the town.
After discussion with Trustees of the Orange Field, the club employed a firm of consultants to work on the preparation of a business case and architects have prepared drawings for a new all weather facility which the club hopes could be used for other sports as well as being a new base for the Roesiders.
A spokesperson for the club said: "It has been aware to us for a considerable period of time that we are going to have to relocate.
“The Northern Ireland Football League, quite rightly, is continuing to push clubs to have facilities fit for the 21st century and we are determined to be a significant player in that project.
