Magilligan prisoner doused inmate with lighter fluid
Thursday, 9 March 2017
A PRISONER who doused another inmate at HMP Magilligan with lighter fluid was jailed for two months yesterday (Monday, March 6).
But the sentence did not affect serving prisoner Paul Mahoney's release date, North Antrim Magistrates, sitting in Coleraine on Monday, March 6, heard.
The prosecutor told the court how 30-year-old Mahoney had asked for lighter fluid on May 11 last year which he then poured over his victim.
Two prisoner officers who spotted the assault intervened and activated an alarm. The injured party was ordered to return to his cell and did not receive any injury but the incident was captured on CCTV cameras.
When Mahoney, who is formerly from Londonderry, was interviewed by police on July 1 and cautioned, he made no reply. He later pleaded guilty to a common assault charge.
In Mahoney's defence, the court was told that he was due for release on September 7 this year. Despite spraying lighter fluid over another prisoner, the defendant had no means of igniting it and no intention of setting his victim on fire.
