Ferry decision ‘called in’ thumbnailSinn Fein and SDLP councillors have ‘called in’ a decision regarding the Magilligan to Greencastle Ferry.

LOCAL Sinn Fein and SDLP councillors have 'called in' a decision to reject a recommendation to agree the principle of giving a subvention (grant) and complete an economic impact study regarding the Magilligan to Greencastle Ferry.
Nationalist Councillors sitting on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council also 'called in' a decision to take over and refurbish Ballymoney's Edward Street Social Centre. The controversy began at the full CC&G council meeting on Tuesday March 28 when the recommendation relating to the local ferry service was rejected. At the same meeting, the main Unionist parties were finally persuaded of the merits of taking over the Ballymoney facility, ratifying a decision to that effect.
The decisions were both made 'in committee' with the press excluded and within days, Sinn Fein and the SDLP had 'called in' both decisions. Explaining his party's actions, Sinn Fein Group Leader, Cllr Dermot Nicholl said: "We felt that these decisions were not properly taken. With respect to the ferry, we never even got to the stage of having facts and figures in front of us before it was shot down.
“Yet in respect of Edward Street reports, guidance from officers and legal advice was all pushed to one side. We've made no budgetary allocation to refurbish this hall and if passed, the money has to be found somewhere to the detriment of other projects. Council don't even own the building, it's mind-boggling.
“We have been told tourism is the 'cash cow' for CC&G, the ferry is one small piece of our infrastructure which we need to be building and growing. Council is an enabler not a PLC. We are sending out the wrong message, it's like saying CC&G is not open for business.
