Friends celebrate two centuries thumbnailAt Ratheane Nursing Home two long time friends celebrate their very special birthdays with Gwen Parkhill (right) who will celebrate her 100th birthday on the 29th May and Nan McLaughlin who was a centenarian on the 5th of June last year

A FRIENDSHIP spanning almost nine decades will be celebrated during a special birthday party at a Coleraine nursing home.
The red carpet will be rolled out at Ratheane on Saturday, June 3, for its oldest residents Gwen Parkhill, who will be 100 on May 29, and Nan McLaughlin, who will be 101 on June 5.
As well as celebrating their centuries, Gwen and Nan have much in common - they were both born in Dungiven and later lived at Union Street in Coleraine.
After leaving school at the age of 14, Gwen met Nan when they both secured jobs at JJ McLean's grocers in New Row. Gwen served customers while Nan was employed in the upstairs office.
They both got engaged in the same week, with their future husbands purchasing rings at Steele's jewellers in Coleraine.
Gwen tied the knot with her husband John in 1942. The couple had two children. Now a very proud great-great grandmother, she admits she has lost count of her many off-spring.
