‘More pigs than people in Limavady’ thumbnailProtesters against the plans for a massive Pig Farm were joined by political party representatives Orla Beattie and John Dallat SDLP, Cathal Ó hOisín Sinn Féin and Eamonn McCann. CAMPAIGNERS against the proposed mega pig farm outside Limavady took their protest from the countryside to the town on Saturday, September 9, hoping to get their objections heard loud and clear. A demonstration was held in Drumceatt Square aimed at raising public awareness about the proposed pig unit of 2,727 sows which it is claimed has the potential to produce 81,800 pigs per year.
Gwyneth McQuiston, from the campaign group, explained the former Limavady Borough Council only had a population of 35,000 people and if these plans are approved by our councillors it will mean that Limavady will have more pigs than people.
Campaigner Diane Greer told the Northern Constitution that a director of the company developing the pig farm, PCM (NI) LTD, is Owen Brennan.
Mr Brennan is also the Chairman of Devenish Nutrition a large animal feed company and he was also a member of the Agri Food Strategy Board responsible for drafting a NI Programme for Government Action Plan called 'Going for Growth.'
