United may have been down to the bare bones but were grateful for the return of Connor Harkin and Colin Murray to the panel.
In spite of the bitter cold and despite the long journey, United started confidently on the ground where they won the title last season, and they had a sensational start by taking the lead through Johnny Watt in the 14th minute, stabbing home an Owens corner after a near post flick on.
