MEMBERS of Ballykelly Women's Institute have had a busy 2017, celebrating the group's 70 years throughout the year. Back in November 1946, some ladies around Ballykelly met to discuss setting up a WI. They then met in December 1946 to elect a committee, including first President Mrs Lily McCloy, and then had their first monthly meeting in Janury 1947.
They met in Ballykelly Primary School and started with 33 members, paying a membership fee of 2/= a year and 1d per meeting to cover tea and sugar. Various craft classes and a choir were formed through the years and membership numbers have gone up and down.
They celebrated 21 years in the Carrick-Na-Cule in Portstewart but were unable to celebrate their 25th due to unsettled conditions in the Province but did celebrate their 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th and this year their 70th anniversaries.
