Waiting list for cataract surgery ‘is an absolute disgrace’: Dallat thumbnailSDLP East Derry MLA John Dallat. N

EAST Derry SDLP MLA, John Dallat has described the waiting list for cataract surgery as "an absolute disgrace." Figures released to the local MLA revealed that, in the Western Trust area, 1782 patients were waiting 17 months for surgery.
Mr Dallat said: "This is an absolute disgrace where there is a serious equality issue because most of those on the waiting list are older people who are deprived of normal activity like reading a newspaper, watching TV or indeed driving a car."
He continued: "This is yet another symptom of the state of the health service and how it impacts on ordinary people who don't have the means to go privately.
“If you have the money or the ability to borrow, this service is available in the private sector virtually on a walk-in basis. Yet for many, it means waiting and waiting to get back their sight so that they can go about their daily lives, remaining independent, keeping mobile and basically remaining independent."
He added: "Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision with nine out of ten people who have cataract surgery regaining very good vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40.
