Limavady school pupil Daniel Reid proudly shows off his Northern Ireland vest after representing his country at the recent UK schools games in Bath.
LOCAL speedster, Daniel Reid has returned from representing Northern Ireland at the UK Schools Games 2008 in Bath.
Daniel finished fourth from a highly talented pool of athletes in the 400 metre hurdles and says he gained valuable experience from the games.
“It was a great weekend," he said, " I gained some great experience competing against some of the best athletes in the U.K."
Daniel secured his place on the Northern Ireland team after an impressive performance at the Tailtean Games at the Morton Stadium in Dublin. Competing in the 400m hurdles, he set a new personal best of 58.98 secs, which he says, is a vast improvement on his previous best of 60.09secs!!
Daniel was understandably thrilled to have been included in the N. Ireland team for the UK School Games, He said: "I have been competing locally for the past three years but you really have to be able to shift up a gear to compete in these National competitions, but if you are serious about your sport, then these are the people you need to race against".
Daniel, who has just finished his GCSE exams at Limavady Grammar School, certainly seems dedicated to his sport, in addition to his studies and holding down a Saturday job, he trains three times each week with the City of Derry Spartans at Templemore.
Daniel's ambition is to compete at the Olympics, but in the meantime he is concentrating on doing his Country proud in Bath at the end of the summer.
With the dedication and talent he has displayed to date, who is to say we won't be cheering him on in London 2012!
