IT'S a big month for golf fans with the Ryder Cup teeing off on September 16 , but closer to home, a young Limavady school boy is on the putting green daily to prepare himself for the most prestigious junior golf tournament on the British Isles.
Ten year old Luke Thompson has qualified for 'The Young Masters Ping' national golf final with a great score that saw him see off the other competitors in style.
Luke is a member of local golf club Roe Park where his current handicap is 18, and can only get lower with the young lad improving his golfing capabilities every week.
Having qualified for the tournament through the Irish qualifying section which was held at Tandragee Golf Club on July 30 Luke will now play at the Telford Golf and Spa resort, Shropshire on October 29 .
Luke who has been a keen golfer from the age of five, is a pupil of Limavady Central Primary School and has a big academic year ahead of him as he will be sitting the 11 Plus. However, he plans to combine his school work and practice time together ahead of the finals which will be televised by Sky Sports.
Luke told The Northern Constitution: "I'm really pleased to get a chance to play in England against boys my own age and to see what I can do".
At present Luke is being coached by P.G.A Professional Sean Devenney at the Radisson in Limavady. Sean says: "We are fortunate to have a lot of young talented golfers at Roe Park and Luke is certainly one of them. This is a great achievement and I wish him well"
