Get active with the 5k Race for life
Thursday, 9 October 2008
LIMAVADY Rotary Club with the assistance of the Interact Club are organising a 5K Race for life on Thursday 30th October around the streets of Limavady.
Many people will have been inspired, not only by the London Marathon but by the Great North Run which saw over 52,000 people take to the streets of Newcastle to Gateshead recently.
The idea behind the 5K walk/run in Limavady is to get people out exercising. It's optional as to whether or not you want to walk it or jog it or run it. The event is being sponsored by Limavady Sports Council with t-shirt, medal and a drink for all finishers.
Chairman of the Sports Council Jack Rankin said: "I welcome this event to the streets of Limavady and I would urge everyone to come and support it. It will be good fun and it will get us all out in the fresh air."
The route is from Connell Street Car Park onto Connell Street, then on the footpath of Irish Green Street, then Market Street, then onto Main Street (where half of the road will be closed to traffic) and then back into Connell Street. Four laps gets us 5K.
It is expected that all ages will be taking part in this event which will hopefully be an annual one.
Entries will be received on the night from 6.00 p.m. at the Borough Council Offices and entry fee is £5.00. Price for the kids entry Under 18 will be £3.00 and the funds are for Northern Ireland Children's Hospice.
For further details please contact Race Organiser Peter Jack on 77722617 (day) or 77763881 (night) who commented: "This is not the Olympics nor is a World Championship. It is important however that we all have fun and participate and enjoy walking, jogging and running in the traffic free streets of Limavady. Our thanks are due to the PSNI for providing us with a safe route and this will be a chance for the walkers and runners of Limavady to come together."
The event is also being supported by Dr. Houston Magee of Limavady Sports Council who said: "In this day and age with rising obesity, diabetes and cardiac problems, it's a great opportunity for the good people of Limavady to put on a pair of walking shoes or running shoes and take to the streets, hopefully it will be the start for many of a healthy pattern of weekly exercise. I would urge my patients and staff to come out and support the event."
