McIlmoyle celebrates opening the scoring in Limavady United’s 3-1 win over Portadown at Shamrock Park on Saturday.
LIMAVADY United's 3 - 1 upset victory at Shamrock Park in Portadown on Saturday has been hailed by the Roesider's manager as, 'a wonderful boost', to their season.
Jim McGroarty couldn't hide his delight at the final whistle as his side condemned early season league favourites Portadown to their fourth league defeat of the campaign, and continued their march up the table into eighth position.
“We came to Shamrock park with a game plan, stuck to it, and it paid off big time," said Jim.
“You know when you come to Portadown that you are going to be under pressure. They have a team crammed with quality players, but we closed them down, and I was delighted with the way we played."
There were plenty of strong individual performances by the Limavady men on the day, but McGroarty was more interested on how the side functioned as a unit, and he was not disappointed: "This really was a team effort, and this is a win that really gives our season a wonderful boost."
Limavady Captain Stephen Kelly, whose foray upfield was the catalyst for United's opening goal echoed his managers sentiments, and sent out a warning to other teams in the Championship, telling them that United have finally found their feet this season, and after Saturday's result, fear no one.
Stephen told The Northern Constitution: "We have upped our training in the past 4 weeks, and I think we are now starting to see the benefits. We got a great result on Saturday and our confidence is growing all the time, and we know on our day we have enough quality in our side to beat anyone.
“We have turned the corner after the troubles we had at the start of the campaign, worked hard on certain aspects of our game in training, and in the league we now don't fear anyone."
United will be hoping to build on this performance when they travel to Lurgan Town Boys in the first round of the WKD Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
