Slaughtneil grind out win over Derrygonnelly thumbnailFrancis McEldowney goes flying during Sunday’s Ulster Club clash against the Fermanagh champions.

Slaughtneil (Derry).................0-12
Derrygonnelly (Fermanagh).....0-7

LAST year Derrygonnelly came to Owenbeg to play an open game against Slaughtneil. This year it was Celtic Park that was the venue and they came with a plan.
That plan was based simply on not getting another pasting and while that part of it worked they lost the match by five points. Last year it was 18.
Slaughtneil are experts at grinding out results even when they are not at their best and for much of the game this was the case at sunny Celtic Park.
The Fermanagh champions were ultra defensive and often bottled up the short passing movements of the Slaughtneil attack.
With referee Noel Mooney tight on over holding the ball there were a number of times when Slaughtneil might have thought they had a free in instead it was a Derrygonnelly free out.
The Slaughtneil victory came at a cost. Big Paudie McGuigan had come on as a sub for the black carded Patsy Bradley and fifteen minutes later he was writhing in agony. He collapsed chasing the ball.
