THE chairman of the Derry county board has paid a glowing tribute to the founder members of Ballerin Sarsfields GAC at a Ruby Ball held to recognise two of the club's most celebrated teams.
Brian Smith said founding fathers Paddy Deighan, Barney McNicholl and Harry Mullan would be incredibly proud of how the club had progressed since its formation in 1944.
“The vision of the men who helped the club play its first game against Faughanvale - how proud those men would be today," he told around 600 guests in Ballymena's Tullyglass House Hotel.
The dinner served to honour the Derry and Ulster winning team of 1976, which went on to lose narrowly in the following year's All Ireland club final, as well as the surviving members of the club's first senior championship side of 1957.
Eleven members of that squad are still alive and five were in attendance on Friday night to be presented with special mementoes by special guest, former Down legend James McCartan.
