Opinions sought on fixtures 2017 calendar

Thursday, 12 January 2017

DERRY'S recently elected County Board vice chairman Stephen Barker, who chairs the Competitions Control Committee, has asked for the opinion of players as his committee sets about putting together a fixtures calendar for the 2017 season. Derry club fixtures are run off better than most other counties but Barker feels that there could still be further improvement and he has asked for the opinion of players at a series of meetings to be held over the next two weeks.
With the fixtures calendar currently the hottest of topics in the national media, Derry's CCC have issued invites to all their clubs to hear new proposals for domestic competitions for 2017.
The meetings are a chance for clubs to give their input from 'both an administrative and playing perspective' according to the new CCC chair. Barker himself is in the unique position of being a player as he is the goalkeeper with his club Moneymore.
“It's vitally important that we have representation at these meetings from both sides of the coin," said the Moneymore man. "Players need to have their voices heard and we are giving them this chance. I'm a player myself," he continued.
“I understand the issues players come across each season, from young players with part time jobs to married men with families. It is vitally important that players get regular matches at dates agreed at the beginning of the year. That's our job on CCC, to do our level best to achieve that goal."
