Derry through to another meeting with neighbours Tyrone thumbnailThe Dr McKenna Cup semi-final Man of the Match was Derry’s Enda Lynn. He is pictured receiving his trophy from main sponsor, BOI’s Fergal McCusker and Ulster President Michael Hasson.

Derry................2-12 Monaghan..............1-13

GIVEN that Derry were not expected to reach the last four, manager Damian Barton had arranged a challenge game with Antrim on Sunday. Instead his troops were playing a highly rated Monaghan team in the McKenna Cup semi-final in front of a good crowd at Armagh and this Saturday at Newry, they will be playing old foes Tyrone in the final of the McKenna Cup.
Tyrone have a love affair with this competition and for Derry, it is a fourth successive final.
Conditions were excellent but the scrappy first half did not match up. In a stop start affair, Derry led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time. Both Adie McLaughlin and Carlus McWilliams had to retire injured.
As well Conor McAtamney and Benny Heron got black cards leaving manager Damian Barton without his starting midfield and two influential forwards.
Taking all that in to consideration, it was a fine performance for Derry to reach the final particularly as they had looked down and out in mid week. Derry had little time, like Monaghan to select a team for the programme given the mid week games. It was not surprising that manager Barton made sweeping changes from the team that had beaten Queens by twenty points.
