FANTASTIC weather and some of the world's top players brought golfers flocking to the North Coast as the Irish Open got underway at Portstewart Golf Club last week.
Roe Park Resort saw its busiest ever week as a result and there was so much on offer for the Roe Park members with a Monthly Medal, Lady Captain's Day and Golfer of the Year Stableford competitions. First up was a Monthly Medal, sponsored by S.J. Mitchell & Co, played in superb conditions with the course set up at its longest thus far.
This proved no problem for winner John Carmichael as he blew the field away with a brilliant round of nett 69. John played steady throughout his round with 7 pars and 11 bogeys the key to his success.
Ricky Cochrane scored a nett 71 for the runner-up spot and Chris Thompson scored a nett 72 for third place.
Club Captain Christine Wilson hosted her Lady Captain's Day, welcoming members and guests to play in what turned out to be a brilliant day for all with great prizes, a refreshment tent and evening entertainment provided.
Marie McGuigan played out of her skin to grab a stunning victory, scoring a mighty 49 points with the highlight of her round being a superb birdie at the tough 14th hole. The runner-up spot went to Shona O'Connor who scored 39 points and third place went to Carol McAllister who scored 38 points.
