LIMAVADY United were well beaten by their visitors in last Tuesday evening's Bet McLean League Cup second round tie, as Paul Owens saw his side fall to a third successive defeat for the first time under his management. However much he will dislike losing, the manager will be phlegmatic about this defeat as a severely weakened team is due to be boosted in the next few days by the return of several key players and he knows that his small squad will always struggle when there are as many absentees as in the past fortnight.
United went for an attacking line up but right from the start, it was the visitors who carried the attacking threat. In the eighth minute, Mooney had the first chance, hooking a shot goalwards from a corner into the six yard box, but Wells was alert to dive to block the shot - the first of many fine saves on a busy evening for the keeper.
United's response was fairly tepid, although McFadden did have a 17th minute shot fly over the crossbar.
The visitors spurned a great chance to take the lead on 23 minutes, McDermott being guilty of a glaring miss as he stopped to head a corner tamely at Wells when unmarked inside the six yard box. At the other end, Adam Wright might have headed Logue's cross into his own net but Wilson was alert to save.
The pressure on United was constant and they were being overpowered in the midfield.
On 37 minutes, the visitors broke through a static home defence and James Wright received the ball on the edge of the box, shooting straight at Wells who was swift to block his shot. Almost immediately, he was back in action, diving at full stretch to parry another effort and the escape was complete when Crown blocked an in-rushing attacker. United were relieved to reach the break on level terms.
