Donnelly the star as Lavey reach semi final

Thursday, 18 January 2018

LAVEY...........................................2-7 GALBALLY..................................0-5

LAVEY were not on the radar for the Derry Under 21 football tournament and had a hint of fortune when they squeezed past Faughanvale in the county final by a point. At Creggan on Sunday, they beat a fancied Galbally team from Tyrone to reach the semi final. With title favourites Crossmaglen beaten by Cavan's Southern Gaels, any of the remaining five teams are capable of winning this tournament. Derry champions Glen had won it for the past three years.
Thomas Donnelly was the toast of Lavey in Sunday's controlled win over Galbally in the Ulster U21 Championship at Creggan. Donnelly had a hand in all of Lavey's scores and recorded 1-6 himself.
It took the Erin's Own side the opening quarter to get settled into the game, with Galbally on top at midfield.
After a cagey opening six minutes, it was Galbally who opened the scoring with a seventh minute Liam Rafferty point. Lavey played with Hugh McGurk as a sweeper, back in front of danger man Daniel Kerr.
