AT the end of the season, this may turn out to be a critical point for the Roesiders, who played with all the insecurities of a team with only one win in its previous ten games. Not because of any great performance, but because this was a game that saw the visitors undone by two moments of outrageous bad fortune which deprived them of the win that they probably deserved against a United side that was simply awful for long periods.
Both of these sides knew that they were perilously close to resurgent Dergview in the relegation dogfight and a win was vital for each. United were missing key personnel and others were clearly carrying injuries, but home advantage put the onus on them.
However, they started slowly and almost fell behind on six minutes as a defence-splitting pass found Hamill storming into the box past a static defence, and he was only denied by an excellent save by Wells, who blocked the force shot with his legs.
The game was the expected frantic contest with neither side able to combine more than a couple of passes at any one time and no sign of a clear cut chance. Then on 15 minutes, United were handed a huge slice of luck when a ball over the top found McCready in a clearly offside position, but inexplicably, the linesman's flag stayed down and he drove down the right wing before crossing to Hume in the six yard box.
The little striker was never going to miss from that range and he duly stabbed the ball home to end his recent goal drought.
Breda were understandably aggrieved but nearly levelled within a minute as Bennett's hanging cross from the bye line had Wells back-pedalling and at full stretch to just touch the ball onto the bar and out for a corner.
