Moyola’s McDermott wins St Patrick’s Day Open at Roe Park thumbnailJust a few of the members who braved the arctic winds to play in the North West Motor Factors’ St Patrick’s Day Open at Roe Park.

LAST week saw limited golf played across the province, thanks to the midweek rain and a blast of arctic weather at the weekend. It wasn't all bad news, thankfully, as the first Open competition of the year got underway unimpeded at Roe Park on Saturday, in the shape of the St Patrick's Day Open Stableford, sponsored by North West Motor Factors.
The conditions were bitter to say the least with cold biting winds reducing the temperature to below zero. Conditions were best summed up by a member who quoted Ruari McSorley (Frostbit Boy) saying: "You wouldn't be long getting frostbit out there."
Other than the freezing temperatures, it was all systems go with a good showing from members as well as players from nearby clubs like Moyola and Castlerock taking part.
It was a closely fought contest with two players shooting the same score of 37 points but victory, ultimately, went to Cathal McDermott from Moyola GC on count back, leaving Roe Park's Gary Marshall in the runner-up spot.
